Think about the force of twisting and pulling that can be put on a babies neck during birth. Think about how many times you fell off your bike as a child. Think about how many times you woke up in a weird position and your neck or back or both were sore/stiff. Think about how you sit at your desk at work. Think about how your body is positioned as you watch TV at night. Those plus stress can all cause issues in your body.

Do you listen to your body?

Our body communicates with us by indicating pain, and if we listen we can usually pretty easily adjust to make it go away. At HealthQuest we look to find what the root cause of your pain is and perform an adjustment to get rid of that root cause. Some pain can take quite awhile to release, while others can feel relief quickly. It all depends on how long you wait to hear that pain and get it checked out. The sooner it is dealt with the better the chances are it can be removed permanently. If you mask the pain by taking medicine, you are masking the messages your body is trying to tell you.

At HealthQuest, every patient who comes in our door for the first time has a one-on-one consultation with our Doctor for 30 minutes. The Doctor asks questions and really listens to each patient to find out what is bothering them and how long it has been an issue. They also work to find out what the patient’s health goals are and tries to help them achieve those goals. Our goal is to use holistic methods with small but meaningful improvements in daily lifestyle to help our patients be the best version of themselves.

Before our Chiropractors can begin your treatment and at each of your assessment exams your pain must be assessed. Assessing pain is subjective because there is no exact tool to measure the amount of pain a patient is experiencing.

During our New Patient Exam our Doctors spend 30 Minutes with you, asking questions, running tests, observing your posture, gait, facial expression of discomfort and involuntary verbalizations. We use a scale of 0 to 10 that is referred back to at follow up exams to check progress. We want to make sure your condition(s) is responding to treatment over time. We also utilize x-rays to show movement of the neck and spine to compare progress.

Pain Measurement and its effect on daily activities are crucial to the creation of our treatment plans. They help us to determine the severity of the injury or condition as well as assess the treatment progress. If an adjustment needs to be made to a treatment of a condition it will be shown during the progress exams if not before. We always want to work toward progress of healing and adjust as needed during treatment.

Pain is a symptom of a condition your body is going through. Pain like many other symptoms can be masked or hidden by medication. Be careful not to hide your symptoms and ignore them. Pain is a great way for the body to communicate needing help.

Walking is such a great form of exercise for people of all ages. Walking is low impact and can provide the most health and longevity benefits. Over 80 million Americans consider themselves walkers. We see people walking day and night – indoors at malls, at parks and around our neighborhoods. Walking is second nature to us yet we have come to forget how to walk properly. There are simple walking techniques that we can use to keep our body balanced and in good form.

ACA spokesperson Karen Erickson, DC, FACC, was featured in a Shape magazine article on the best ways to improve posture, nix pain and boost confidence when walking. According to Dr. Erickson, “Most people don’t walk with proper alignment. From all of the sitting that we do during the day, our hip flexors are tight so we walk with our hips flexed, our back arched and our bum behind us.”

Be mindful of your form when walking. A great stride has good posture and purposeful movements. Follow the 7 points of proper walking techniques to get the most of your walks and to avoid imbalances that can cause misalignments and joint pain.

Proper Walking Techniques

  • Hold your head high
  • Look forward – not at the ground or your phone
  • Chin should be parallel to the ground
  • Move shoulders naturally – hands free from devices
  • Swing arms freely with your elbows slightly bent
  • Gently tighten your stomach muscles
  • Wear appropriate walking shoes & walk by rolling your foot from heel to toe

If I could give more stars I would. Dr. Prewitt and his whole staff is amazing. I went in 8 weeks ago thinking I was not going to be able to be helped and only surgery would fix me. Happily I was wrong. I went from being debilitated to back in the gym and relatively pain free in less than 8 weeks. I can’t say enough good things about his program. If you have to go to physical therapy, this is the place to go.
